- This blog is an exercise to come up with something creative and fun (almost) everyday. As a graphic designer and illustrator, I am constantly challenged to solve problems creatively and of course, in a timely manner. This site was formed to strengthen those skills so as not to get fired in the near future.

ReplyDeleteOnly problem is that Frankenstein was the creator, not the monster.
Also, technically Dracula also falls into the middle as he was also resurrected from the dead.

ReplyDeleteI know the scientist was named Frankenstein, but for the sake of it making sense in one word, I figured "monster" just wouldn't cut it.

OM, you should stop and think about why rationalists feel that way about believers. It seems as though these "minds" you speak of fail to aquire evidence or logical reasoning for their existence over any given length of time, not unlike God.
ReplyDeleteIn a repeated coin toss, the randomness of 50/50 odds are revealed in finer and finer detail as the flips increase in number. In this same fashion, we are learning more and more, every day, about the density of the singularity sitting atop Glenn Beck's shoulders.
Don't you mean "fear and revile"? I don't remember the townspeople revering Frankenstein, Dracula, OR Jesus. (Jesus' homies ran him out of their synagogue for being too big for his britches.)

The monster was not called Frankenstein in the original book, but it has been called Frankensteinin countless adaptations, derivative works and appraisals since. Insisting that it's not 'really' called Frankenstein misses the point of how language works.
ReplyDeleteIt is a real tragedy when Christ is ridiculed in this manner, being compared to fictional characters as if his suffering were a joke. You are absolutely entitled to your opinion, but it seems like you could find a more intelligent way through which to express it. Mindless, disrespecful slander is quite the primitive and uneducated tactic. A person's religion is no joke, whether you believe in it or not. The least one could ask for is respect.

ReplyDeleteI don't think this is "mindless"; I think it's pretty witty. The artist is pointing out how three of the things that believers cite as evidence of the power of their god are traits shared by monsters. It highlights the irony of worshipping such a figure. That's how comedy works, boss.

I am puzzled by the assertion that the least one could ask for is respect. Asking for respect does not make one worthy of respect. And that whole notion about asking and you shall receive sounds too much like groveling to actually work in the acquisition of respect.
ReplyDeleteHmm… I'll have to whistle a technical foul on the leftmost circle. By all Biblical accounts, Jesus taught in parables, and parables pretty much require the listener to be a thinking participant.
ReplyDeleteWhile it's unfortunately true that there are many cults who seek out "mindless followers", I don't think Jesus can fairly be lumped into that category, based on the accounts we have.
That being said, the intersections of the top circle did make me chuckle - clearly, resurrection from the dead can be very, very bad if not done correctly!

I am offended that someone would lump Zombies in with fictional characters. People who suffer from affliction are very real - not like those other things mentioned. It is mean-spirited to make fun of such suffering.
ReplyDeleteThere's no debate over Jesus' existence. The scholarly debate is whether or not he's the son of god. Even the most ardent agnostic or atheist with a high school education can tell you that. The first commandment of being a smart ass is to at least know some elementary facts about what you are mocking. I'm only mentioning this because I do genuinely like the joke the diagram aims for, but would feel better knowing that others who feel the same way don't sound like they are talking out of their ass, especially when they are presenting themselves as some kind of voice of reason. Otherwise, special thanks for that laugh to the guy who schools people on how comedy works by misusing the term irony by making it a synonym for fallacy.

And judging by the tremendous amount of comments seen around the web, sparking a debate is all I could ask for!
ReplyDeleteIn all seriousness, I did want to show that by carefully wording or defining something, one can create similarities between seemingly unrelated topics - even if it's zombies and Jesus. We must be rational thinkers and remember that just because something is written down, it doesn't necessarily make it true.

ReplyDeleteI stand corrected, and was sloppy in just trying to say that the debate is goofy in this context, yet in wanting to do so I was goofy myself. All I really was trying to say was that I don't think anyone that this diagram is for really cares if Jesus existed or not; bottom line is that no agnostic or atheist believes he's a holy figure.

Looking at this in another perspective, I see that really the center of all this should not have been Jesus Christ but Allah. Why you ask? If you study the rest of the diagram not focusing in on Frankenstien and Dracula, what do you have? What I see is Islamic terrorists. Mindless Zombies, convert mindless towns people, towns people who fear him. Then of course what you have is, Osama, being Dracula sucking the life from his followers. Frankenstien being the aholes that fund his holy war. And the resereced being those jackass' who think they have 40 virgins on the other side. Just a different look at it.

People are pointing out that Frankenstein was the name of the creator, not the creature. But I don't see anyone pointing out that in the original book, neither one was stated to have resurrected from the dead. The popular image is of a monster built from dead bodies, but the book never says what the creature was made from. Frankenstein purposely avoids giving hints at the ingredients and process he used because he does not want Walton or anyone else to attempt to recreate it.
